in the exhibition „cogito error sum“ the artist contemplates on the nature of language and thought by pointing to its history as the cradle of modern civilisation on the one hand and to its limitations as a merely terminological perception of the world on the other hand.
he finds himself compelled to do so, because he feels a certain discontent in his personal life. he is wondering about the reasons for his exaggerated engagement in selfreflection and the inherited circular structure of these kinds of thinking processes. in general he regards his engagement in art as a means to shed light onto the question: how can one escape the limits of rationality, and should one engage in such an endeavor in the first place?
the design of the exhibition pays tribute to his inabiltiy to escape his circling thoughts and his persistence in the realm of language, instead of passing over to the realm of images, which would be the common practice in art. however the persistence is just a putative one in regard, that the main focus lies more on the aesthetics of the written language than on the content, and hence with its implication in the perception of the world and of oneself.
the artist sees himself imbedded in the era of the iconic turn with one foot in the text- based past and the other in the image-sensitive future. he embraces and at the same time rejects both approaches to life and feels homeless between them.
in this exhibition he demonstrates his need for consistency and identity by putting his stream of thought on the wall of the gallery. the viewer is immersed in a web of words like the artist is sheltered by a web of meaning, that comforts him like a warm pullover against the cold contingency of the world. but at the same time the words as well as the meaning are revealing their abstract, illusionary nature in their appearence as a simplifying and conformistic pattern. to further emphasize his distrust in the meaning of words he assembles sculptural letters on the floor forming sentences, which were generated by chatgpt, an artificial intelligence chatbot, as a psychoanalysis to the artists written thoughts on the wall.
all together the installation is symbolic for the decline of language and the relativity of meaning in modern society.
